Where It All Began For Yegro
At the start, Yegro got into collecting for the simple reasons; the artwork, the excitement of opening packs, the feeling of picking up something cool.
However, collecting slowly started becoming more personal for him, and began wanting to build a collection that feels authentically him.
Along the way, each piece he picked up started to reflect where he was at that particular point in his collecting journey. What he liked, how his taste was changing, and what he was learning along the way.
Collecting On His Own Terms
If there’s one thing Yegro is very clear about, it’s that he doesn’t collect just because something is popular. That’s to say if a card stops exciting him, he’s completely fine letting it go.
That’s pretty much how his collection has taken shape over the years; as he continually figures out what actually matters to him.
He also doesn’t like the idea of keeping everything locked away. He prefers to actually see his cards, display them, live with them. Otherwise, it starts to feel like he’s just holding value instead of enjoying the hobby.
A Special Serialized Monkey D. Luffy
One of Yegro’s most prized possessions is his first serialized PSA 10 Monkey D. Luffy.
While it may have a market valuation of around $70,000 SGD today, he managed to pick it up at a fraction of that price.
This piece is especially special to him because it reflects everything he’s learned as a collector. It was a card he had been eyeing for a long time, and finally managing to get it made it that much more meaningful. The fact that its value went up over time just made it even sweeter—but for him, its significance goes far beyond price.
To him, the Luffy represents a broader lesson within the hobby. Collectors often look back at older cards—like Ponchos or Gold Stars—and think about how “cheap” they once were, with those who held onto them now seen as ahead of their time. That perspective shaped his approach to collecting.
He learned the importance of being intentional, buying with purpose, and allowing time to do its work. He believes opportunities like this will always exist in the hobby, but only for those who approach collecting with discipline.
And without that mindset, it becomes easy to fall into the trap of constantly putting in new capital just to keep up, rather than letting a collection grow naturally.
Trading Up To A BGS Black Label Zoro
A part of collecting Yegro really enjoys is working his way towards bigger pieces over time.
Recently, he managed to pick up his serialized BGS Black Label Zoro, but it didn’t come easy. To get there, he had to let go of several valuable cards, including one he had previously gotten from fellow TCG enthusiast KrreeAlpha.
For Yegro, process is what makes it meaningful for him. There’s a different kind of satisfaction in slowly building towards a grail by selling off smaller pieces, compared to just buying it outright.
Rather than simply collecting (and holding onto) what you love, the better question is whether something still excites you and adds meaning to your collection.
What's Next In Yegro's Collecting Journey?
Lately, Yegro has a growing interest in serialized cards as he appreciates the idea of owning something with a true fixed print run, and individualized identity.
He’s also curious to see whether Pokémon will eventually introduce serialized cards, especially now that Yu-Gi-Oh! has started venturing into that space. If that were to happen, Yegro predicts it could create a whole new level of excitement within the hobby.
But for now, he’s not chasing anything rare. He’s just on the lookout for pieces that feel significant, have a strong presence, and genuinely excite him.
