Building a Collector’s Dream: Joel’s Journey into the World of Collectibles
Joel (@joelhoardcards) has been passionate about collecting for many years, and his journey is nothing short of inspiring.
From Pokémon cards to Bearbricks and designer toys, Joel’s dedication to his diverse collection is rooted in a dream he’s finally brought to life—a personal museum to showcase his cherished items.
The Museum Dream Turned Reality
One of Joel’s most memorable moments as a collector happened earlier this year in 2024, when he finally achieved a long-held ambition.
“For years, I dreamed of having my own museum to display my collection, but living with my parents meant everything was stored in boxes,” Joel explains.
“After I bought my own place and with my wife’s agreement, I was able to set it up. Now, I can share my passion and knowledge with family and friends, giving them the museum experience without ever having to pay for one!”
With his new space, Joel can finally feature his wide range of items that establish his status as a true connoisseur. “I collect almost everything you can think of—TCG cards, statues, Funko and Lego,” he says.
For Joel, it’s not just about acquiring specific items, but finding pieces that resonate with his ever-growing collection. “As long as something fits into my collection and the price is right, I’ll go for it!”
Always spend within your means. Collecting can be addictive, but it’s important to save for rainy days. You never know when you might need that extra cash.
The Crown Jewel: A 4th Print Base Set Charizard
Among all of Joel’s collectibles, his most prized possession is his 4th print base set Charizard. This card holds special significance, as it was the first card he personally graded.
Acquired as a raw card a few years ago, Joel discovered that PSA acknowledges the 4th print with the ‘1999-2000’ label, a realization that filled him with excitement.
The card was also a pop 1 when first graded, adding to its rarity, as base set 4th prints were (and still are) incredibly hard.
The entire experience, from discovery to grading, became a pivotal moment in Joel’s collecting journey, deepening his passion for the hobby.
Friendships and Memories That Grow Through Collecting
For Joel, collecting transcends the pursuit of rare items; it’s about the lasting connections formed along the way. The friendships built throughout his journey have become just as valuable as the treasures in his collection.
